Resolution

PROCLAIMING MAY 2025 AS ASIAN AMERICAN, NATIVE HAWAIIAN,

AND PACIFIC ISLANDER HERITAGE MONTH

IN CONTRA COSTA COUNTY.

Whereas, nearly one in every five Contra Costa County residents belong to an Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) community, and Contra Costa County pays tribute to the many diverse cultures of the AANHPI community, recognizing their roles as educators, public officials, entrepreneurs, community builders and activists, and leaders shaping all facets of our society, culture, and daily lives; and

Whereas, with more than 6 million Californians of Asian or Pacific Islander descent, California is home to dynamic AAPI communities that are an invaluable part of the state and nation.  May 2024 is proclaimed as California’s Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, recognizing and celebrating California’s diverse heritage with all the ways that AAPI Californians enrich and strengthen our society; and

Whereas, May 2025 is recognized as the national Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and we celebrate the diversity of cultures, breadth of achievement, and remarkable contributions of these communities; and

Whereas, work and commitment to continue to put the American Dream within reach of all people, and we celebrate the vibrancy, contributions, and future of Asian American and Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander communities across the U.S.; and

Whereas, we recognize that throughout our history, AANHPI communities have been the target of discrimination, exclusion, and violence. It is imperative that we, together with state and federal partners, confront and condemn past and present racism and fight for the safety and inclusion of our AANHPI friends and neighbors; and

Whereas, by proclaiming May 2025 as Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we honor and stand with pride alongside our community, a community for everyone to celebrate without shame or fear of exclusion and violence based on food, features, language and customs; and

Whereas, on May 13, 2025, the 3rd Annual Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Commemorative Celebration, “Roots of Resilience” will be held at the Board Chambers featuring a rich and diverse program including cultural dance and music performances, heritage spotlights, and immigrant experiences.  This celebration reaffirms Contra Costa County’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and access.

Now, therefore be it resolved that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County does hereby proclaim May 2025 as Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander Heritage Month.  We are dedicated to creating an inclusive Contra Costa where all AANHPI community members can thrive and prosper through substanative actions and equitable policies, procedures, and practices protecting their wellbeing.
