IN THE MATTER OF IN THE MATTER OF Recognizing Rosa Parks Day

in Contra Costa County on December 1, 2025

 

WHEREAS, on December 1, 1955, in Montgomery, Alabama, Rosa Parks, an African American civil rights activist, refused to give up her seat to a white passenger on a segregated bus, an act of courage that became a defining moment in the American civil rights movement; and

WHEREAS, Rosa Parks, as part of a broad network of civil rights activists and herself an established organizer with the NAACP Montgomery Chapter well before that fateful day on the bus, courageously accepted the daunting task of sparking a strategic, citywide bus boycott garnering national attention and action that crossed racial, class, and political lines across the country; and

WHEREAS, Rosa Parks was a symbol of dignity and strength in the fight to eradicate racial discrimination and segregation in the United States because of her moral courage and unwavering dedication to justice; and

WHEREAS, throughout her life, Rosa Parks continued to advocate for equality, education, and opportunity, working alongside civil rights leaders such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and inspiring generations to stand up against injustice in all forms; and

WHEREAS, Rosa Parks received numerous honors for her legacy of service and sacrifice, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal, and she remains a global symbol of the power of peaceful resistance; and

WHEREAS, Rosa Parks' bravery serves as a reminder that one person's unwavering determination can ignite a movement and result in significant, long-lasting change in the fight for justice and liberty for everyone; and

WHEREAS, Rosa Parks Day provides an opportunity to reflect on the ongoing pursuit of equity and inclusion within our communities, and to reaffirm Contra Costa County’s commitment to ensuring that all residents are treated with dignity and respect; and

WHEREAS, the Board of Supervisors encourages all residents to honor the legacy of Rosa Parks by participating in community service, education, and dialogue that promote unity and social justice.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors does hereby recognize December 1, 2025, as Rosa Parks Day in Contra Costa County and encourages all residents to honor her legacy by continuing the work toward equality, opportunity, and justice for all.
