The Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County, California
IN THE MATTER OF Recognizing July as Disability Pride Month.
WHEREAS, Disability Pride Month is observed each July to commemorate the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), signed into law on July 26, 1990, affirming the civil rights of millions of Americans with disabilities and recognizing that disability is a natural and valuable part of human diversity; and
WHEREAS, Disability Pride Month celebrates the strength, resilience, talents, and contributions of people with disabilities while promoting inclusion, accessibility, equity, and the full participation of all individuals in every aspect of community life; and
WHEREAS, Contra Costa County is home to a vibrant and diverse community of people with disabilities whose leadership, creativity, and lived experiences enrich our neighborhoods, workplaces, schools, businesses, and civic institutions; and
WHEREAS, the County is strengthened by the dedicated work of nonprofit organizations, advocates, service providers, families, self-advocates, and community partners who work tirelessly to ensure that individuals with disabilities have opportunities to live independently, pursue meaningful employment, access quality healthcare, engage in lifelong learning, and fully participate in community life; and
WHEREAS, organizations including Full Circle of Choices, the Contra Costa Developmental Disabilities Council, the Independent Living Resources, Choice in Aging, the Down Syndrome Connection of the Bay Area, RES Success and Las Trampas and many other nonprofit and community organizations demonstrate every day that inclusion, accessibility, and person-centered support empower people with disabilities to thrive and contribute their unique gifts to our community; and
WHEREAS, these organizations, together with countless advocates, caregivers, educators, employers, and public agencies, help foster communities where every individual is respected, valued, and afforded the opportunity to live with dignity, independence, and self-determination; and
WHEREAS, Disability Pride Month provides an opportunity for all residents of Contra Costa County to celebrate disability culture, recognize the ongoing pursuit of equity and accessibility, challenge stigma and discrimination, and recommit to building communities where every person belongs;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED: that the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors hereby proclaims July as Disability Pride Month in Contra Costa County and encourages all residents to celebrate the achievements and contributions of people with disabilities, honor the organizations and individuals who advance inclusion and accessibility, and work together to create a county where every person can live, work, learn, and thrive.
