BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY

POSTHUMOUS RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING THE CONTRIBUTIONS

OF MS. CURLIE JACKSON

 

WHEREAS, Curlie Jackson was born and raised in Glenmora, Louisiana, and moved to Pittsburg, California in 1955 with her family. She was married to the late General Jackson for over 25 years, and together they raised seven children: James, Samuel, Jimmy, Richard, Linda, Isaac, and Donald. She is also survived by 27 grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren; and

 

WHEREAS, Ms. Jackson was employed at the Pittsburg Unified School District (PUSD) for thirty-two years as a Parent Coordinator and worked for ten years at the Contra Costa County Juvenile Hall in Martinez, California, as a Youth Counselor. She continued her education and received an Associate Degree in 1975 from Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill, California, and attended Los Medanos College in Pittsburg, amassing over 40 credit hours towards a degree in Psychology and Social Science; and

 

WHEREAS, Ms. Jackson retired from PUSD as a Parent Coordinator and Student Advisor in 2005, yet she never retired from serving others, known for her sacrifices in service to others and her unwavering passion and devotion to the welfare of others; and

 

WHEREAS, Ms. Jackson became active in the community, serving as Chairperson of Woods Manor Board of Directors, President of the NAACP East County Branch, and a long-term active member of First Baptist Church of Pittsburg. She also served on various PUSD advisory boards and committees, including but not limited to the Student Attendance Review Board (SARB) from 2000 to the present, PUSD School Site Council at Heights Elementary School, PUSD School Site Council at Pittsburg High School, PUSD Communications Committee, the Pittsburg Education Committee that established Parent Coordinator roles in elementary schools, and was a member of the Contra Costa Interfaith Supporting Communities Organization (CCISCO) efforts to review the implementation of the PUSD’s student assessment policy and procedures; and

 

WHEREAS, in 2005, Ms. Jackson was honored by the NAACP at the East Contra Costa County Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration with the Love & Action Award for her compassionate community service, continuing to excel in advocating for others; and

 

WHEREAS, Ms. Jackson had over 42 years of progressive leadership and brought to the board a wealth of experience from her dedicated service to the community, students, and their families, being recognized as one of PITTSBURG’S INCREDIBLE WOMEN who made a difference in the community; and

 

WHEREAS, Ms. Jackson, a tireless advocate and community leader, passed away on May 24, 2024, leaving a legacy of commitment, service, and compassion that will be remembered and cherished by all who knew her;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Supervisors of Contra Costa County, do hereby posthumously recognize and honor the life and contributions of Ms. Curlie Jackson, acknowledging her lifelong dedication to education, civil rights, and community advocacy. Her memory will continue to inspire and impact the lives of many within our community and beyond.

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Board of Supervisors extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Ms. Curlie Jackson. Her tireless efforts and passion for justice have left an indelible mark on our community, and she will be greatly missed.
