IN THE MATTER OF honoring Holotta Tymes for her advocacy, entrepreneurship, and support of the LGBTQIA+ Community 

 

WHEREAS, Holotta Tymes has been a well-known Bay Area performer for more than three decades and portrayed drag characters with comedic references to Lucille Ball and Estelle Getty; and

WHEREAS, her performances have brought joy and acceptance to many; and  

 

WHEREAS, Club 1220, originally known as the Hub, opened in 1976 in Walnut Creek and is known to have one of the longest-running drag shows in the Bay Area and is a safe space for the LGBTQIA+ Community; and

 

WHEREAS, in 2020, after working at Club 1220 in several capacities since the 1990s, Holotta became one of the owners of Club 1220; and

 

WHEREAS, Holotta loved the sense of community around Club 1220 and sought to preserve the safe space for the LGBTQIA+ Community; and

 

WHEREAS, when many gay bars were permanently closing in the wake of the pandemic, Holotta fought to keep Club 1220 open through virtual drag shows and dance parties, using GoFundMe to accept donations which kept the bills paid; and

 

WHEREAS, the virtual drag shows and dance parties maintained a sense of community and brought hope and connection to many people during the pandemic; and

 

WHEREAS, when Club 1220 reopened during the pandemic, they partnered with local restaurant, House of Sake, to offer drinks on the restaurant’s patio which further uplifted small businesses in the area; and

 

WHEREAS, Holotta has given back to the LGBTQIA+ community by holding countless fundraisers at Club 1220 including AIDS/Lifecycle, Camp Sunshine, and Pride on the Plaza (Concord); and

 

WHEREAS, she has participated in the AIDS/Lifecycle, riding from San Francisco to Los Angeles to raise awareness and funds for AIDS/ HIV care, prevention and testing services and to end the stigma around AIDS/HIV.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED: that the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors recognizes Holotta Tymes and honors the hard work and support she provides the LGBTQIA+ Community as an entertainer, entrepreneur, and advocate.
