Report Title:                     Palo Alto Networks, Inc.

Recommendation of the County Administrator Recommendation of Board Committee

RECOMMENDATIONS:

APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the Sheriff-Coroner, or designee, to execute a contract with Palo Alto Networks, Inc. in an amount not to exceed $87,060 for the GlobalProtect cyber security software for the Office of the Sheriff, for the period July 1, 2024 through June 30, 2027.

FISCAL IMPACT:

Approval of this request will result in a one-time expenditure of $87,060 and will be funded 89.7% by the Homeland Security Grant FY21 and 10.3% by the General Fund.

BACKGROUND:

Palo Alto Networks, Inc. (PAN) participated in a competitive selection process and was awarded the contract (RFP 2309-682). PAN is an industry leader in providing hardware and software firewall solutions. The Sheriff’s Office has PAN hardware and software installed at multiple locations within the department. This purchase will add IoT Security software to the two firewall devices in the data center located in the Emergency Operations Center (EOC).

IoT (Internet of Things) Security works with the existing firewall to dynamically discover and maintain a real-time inventory of the IoT devices on your network. These devices can include cellular phones, smart locks, sensors, and building cameras. When connected to the network, these devices can present additional security vulnerabilities.  Adding the IoT Security software increases defense against smart devices that connect to our network, including personal and vendor devices.

This End User License Agreement allows the Office of the Sheriff to renew support to ensure software updates and issues can be appropriately addressed. Palo Alto Networks, Inc. does not sell direct to customers, therefore it will be purchased through AT&T, a third-party reseller.

This End User License Agreement includes a limitation of liability provision.

CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:

If the Board does not approve, the firewall protection will remain as is, leaving IoT devices that connect to the Office of the Sheriff network susceptible to potential hacks and intrusions.
