IN THE MATTER OF MUSLIM APPRECIATION AND AWARENESS MONTH - APRIL 2026

 

WHEREAS, freedom of religion is an enshrined right and principle in this nation, which has molded much of the laws and ethics we uphold; and

 

WHEREAS, enriched by a remarkable tapestry of unique cultures, faiths, and traditions, Contra Costa County has long demonstrated a steadfast commitment to supporting individual religious freedoms and is strengthened by the rich diversity of its residents, including those who practice Islam; and

 

WHEREAS, Muslims have been part of U.S. history before its founding, contributing to the building of the nation’s infrastructure, economy, and culture, as well as playing pivotal roles in advancing the civil rights movement; and

 

WHEREAS, more than 250,000 Muslims reside in the Bay Area, including over 11,000 in Contra Costa County, enriching our community with their culture and service; and

 

WHEREAS, American Muslims represent a rich mosaic of ethnicities and backgrounds and contribute meaningfully across all sectors of society-including healthcare, education, business, public service, science, technology, and the arts; and

 

WHEREAS, Muslims across our county serve as doctors, teachers, lawyers, entrepreneurs, and public servants, strengthening our economy and embodying the values of hard work, innovation, and compassion; and

 

WHEREAS, Muslim youth are increasingly active in civic life, education, and leadership, reflecting a deep commitment to shaping a more just, inclusive, and forward-thinking society; and

 

WHEREAS, mosques, Islamic centers, and Muslim-led organizations throughout the country-including local institutions such as the San Ramon Valley Islamic Center-provide vital community services which benefit people of all faiths and upbringings, including food and financial assistance, disaster relief, environmental stewardship, and educational outreach; and

 

WHEREAS, acknowledging the contributions and experiences of American Muslims helps combat harmful stereotypes, fosters understanding, strengthens the unity of our shared community, and celebrates the vast array of invaluable contributions of American Muslims in Contra Costa County and extends to them the respect and camaraderie every American deserves; and

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the County Board of Supervisors does hereby recognize April as Muslim Appreciation and Awareness Month and calls upon the people of the County of Contra Costa to observe this month with relevant programs, activities, and reflections to create a more inclusive, just, and prosperous community for all.
