RECOMMENDATIONS:

ADOPT a resolution proclaiming March 2026 as Women's History Month, as recommended by the Contra Costa County Commission for Women and Girls.

 

FISCAL IMPACT:

None.

 

BACKGROUND:

The Contra Costa County Commission for Women and Girls has requested that a Resolution recognizing March 2026 as Women's History Month be adopted by the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors.

 

The Commission for Women and Girls was established in 1984 to serve as an advisory committee to the Board of Supervisors and to stop the disregard and overlooking of women and girls in Contra Costa County. The Commission was also designed to provide advice on the health, welfare, and economic conditions facing women and girls in the community.

 

To date, the Commission for Women and Girls has provided educational events for women and girls in the County and provided referrals and resources for women and girls who need assistance with issues in domestic violence, abuse, and harassment. The Commission has also co-sponsored events and forums to address issues related to women and girls. The Commission uplifts numerous local and national champaigns, such as Women’s History Month, for the recognition and improvement of women and girls’ lives in Contra Costa County.

IN THE MATTER OF

PROCLAIMING MARCH 2026 AS WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH, AND RECOGNIZING MARCH 8, 2026, AS INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY IN CONTRA COSTA COUNTY.

 

WHEREAS, Women’s History Month is annually observed to highlight and celebrate the contributions of women to events in history and contemporary society;

 

WHEREAS, in 1980, President Jimmy Carter proclaimed the week of March 8th as National Women’s History Week.  Women’s History Week was then expanded in March 1987, when Congress passed Public Law 100-9, which designated March as National Women’s History Month;

 

WHEREAS, women of every race, class, ethnicity, and sexual orientation have made historic contributions to our county, state, and nation in countless recorded and unrecorded ways;

 

WHEREAS, women have greatly influenced and advanced every aspect of life and culture in The United States of America. Women have served in the military. Women have also contributed and advanced space exploration, aviation, art, music, sports, and medicine. Women have also helped to discover a cure for tuberculosis, and a treatment for leprosy, and more;

 

WHEREAS, women have been leaders in organizing and tirelessly fighting for women’s rights of suffrage. Women have also been leaders in the abolitionist movement, industrial labor movements, and the civil rights movement in order to bring forth a more just and fair society;

 

WHEREAS, despite the contributions of women and girls, their roles in society, their personal health, and welfare, have been consistently overlooked and disregarded.

 

WHEREAS, in 1984 the Contra Costa Commission for Women and Girls was established to stop the disregard and overlooking of women and girls, and to further address the health, welfare, and economic conditions of women and girls in Contra Costa County;

 

WHEREAS, the creation of the Contra Costa Commission for Women and Girls was further established to serve as an advisory committee to the Board of Supervisors in Contra Costa County. The commission was also designed to provide advice on the health, welfare, and economic conditions facing women and girls in Contra Costa County;

 

WHEREAS, to date, the Contra Costa Commission for Women and Girls have provided educational events for women and girls in the county, referrals and resources for women and girls who need assistance with issues in domestic violence, abuse, and harassment. The commission has also co-sponsored events and forums to address issues related to women and girls;

 

WHEREAS, we also recognize and celebrate the countless contributions made by local women in the County of Contra Costa. These women are our doctors, nurses, caretakers, teachers, food service workers, active military and veterans, and elected officials, and more.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED:

that the County of Contra Costa, Board of Supervisors proclaims the month of March 2026 as Women’s History Month.
