In the matter of recognizing the Community Youth Center (CYC) on the Grand Opening of their expanded Youth Center

 

 

WHEREAS, access to high-quality youth programs and safe community spaces plays a vital role in supporting the academic success, physical well-being, and personal development of young people throughout Contra Costa County; and

WHEREAS, investing in youth development is essential to building safe, healthy, and thriving communities, and providing young people with access to educational, recreational, and personal growth opportunities strengthens the future of our county; and

WHEREAS, the Board of Supervisors designated one-time Measure X funding for the creation of three new youth centers across Districts III, IV, and V, along with ongoing Measure X funds to support programs for youth in our community, regardless of their ability to pay; and

WHEREAS, the District IV youth center will provide local youth with expanded access to programs focused on personal development, education, and recreation; and

WHEREAS, Supervisor Ken Carlson identified the Community Youth Center as an ideal partner for the District IV Measure X youth center, given its longstanding presence, proven track record, and deep connections within the community; and

WHEREAS, the Community Youth Center successfully completed a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) process, demonstrating its expertise and capacity to serve as the Measure X funded youth center for District IV; and

WHEREAS, the Community Youth Center (CYC), founded in 1995, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that currently serves over 2,000 youth in the Concord area through programs in sports, gymnastics, cheerleading, dance, tutoring, and counseling; and

WHEREAS, with this new Measure X funding, CYC has expanded its operations into a 75,000 square-foot facility located at the former Big C Athletic Club on Galaxy Court; and

WHEREAS, the new facility will double CYC’s capacity, enabling the organization to serve up to 3,800 youth annually; and

WHEREAS, CYC has secured $2 million in state funding and $1.5 million from the City of Concord to support the renovation of this facility; and

WHEREAS, the County’s $5 million Measure X grant will complete the funding necessary for the renovation of the new youth center; and

WHEREAS, the development of the new Community Youth Center facility represents a collaborative investment made possible through the partnership of the County, the State, the City of Concord, and community stakeholders, all working together to expand opportunities and resources for local youth; and

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors hereby celebrates the grand opening of the Community Youth Center’s new District IV Youth Center and new facility and commends CYC for its longstanding commitment to serving youth and families in the Contra Costa County.
