IN THE MATTER OF honoring Tim Flaherty, Pleasant Hill City Council Member, for the time he served as a Councilmember for the City of Pleasant Hill

 

 

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Tim Flaherty was born and raised in San Francisco where he received a fine Jesuit education, graduating from St. Ignatius College Preparatory, University of San Francisco (1978, B.A. Government) and the University Of San Francisco School Of Law (1981, J.D.); and

 

Whereas, Mr. Flaherty moved to Walnut Creek in 1984 where he served on the transportation sub-committee of the Walnut Creek in the Year 2000 Committee; and

 

Whereas, he moved to the Poet’s Corner neighborhood of Pleasant Hill in 1997; and

 

Whereas, in 2001 Mr. Flaherty was appointed to the Civic Action Commission and served as its long-time Chair until December 2012. Tim served as a Planning Commissioner from 2010-2012 and also served as the Chair of the City’s 50th Anniversary Celebration Committee in 2011; and

 

Whereas, Mr. Flaherty received the Mayor’s Award in 2010 and was recognized as the Pleasant Hill Citizen of the Year in 2011; and

 

Whereas, Mr. Flaherty was elected to the Pleasant Hill City Council in 2012. He served as Mayor in 2018 and 2023 as well as Vice Mayor in 2017 and 2022; and

 

Whereas, he has served on a number of regional boards representing the City of Pleasant Hill, including the Association of Bay Area Governments, League of California Cities, and Central Contra Costa Transit Authority; and

 

Whereas, during his tenure on the Pleasant Hill City Council, Mr. Flaherty has built a strong record of fostering consensus and making thoughtful, pragmatic decisions that drive economic growth and enhance the City's development, all while preserving the unique character and integrity of its neighborhoods; and

 

Whereas, Mr. Flaherty has played a key role in organizing and supporting numerous community events and activities that encourage residents to engage with one another, while also promoting small businesses and bolstering the vitality of the downtown area; and

 

Whereas, with his passion for libraries, Mr. Flaherty worked along with his council and the County to open the new Pleasant Hill Library, which offers a modern and spacious facility that serves as a hub for learning, community engagement, and cultural enrichment for residents from all over; and

 

Whereas, Mr. Flaherty has been a strong advocate for sustainability policies, championing initiatives that promote environmental responsibility, and ensure a greener, more sustainable future for all residents; and

 

Whereas, in 2023 as Mayor, Mr. Flaherty played a pivotal role in successfully navigating the complex process of moving the council to district-based elections; and

 

Whereas, Mr. Flaherty has exhibited unwavering dedication to the community, working collaboratively with fellow councilmembers, city staff, and local stakeholders to address the needs of the city and ensure a prosperous future for all who call Pleasant Hill home; and

 

Whereas, Mr. Flaherty’s commitment to public service is inspiring, and he dedicates himself to mentoring young colleagues. His guidance not only helps them grow professionally but also instills a deep sense of civic responsibility. I have no doubt that his example will inspire others to volunteer their time and efforts for the greater good of the community; and

 

Whereas, Mr. Flaherty has remained a steadfast leader whose public service has fostered a vibrant and engaged community that enriches the lives of its residents, promotes collaboration, and will drive positive change for future generations.

 

 

 

 

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED: that the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors recognizes Mr. Tim Flaherty for his exceptional service as a Councilmember for the City of Pleasant Hill, his outstanding leadership, and his unwavering commitment to the betterment of the community.
