ADOPT Resolution Proclaiming May 2024 as Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in Contra Costa County as recommended by Supervisor Federal D. Glover.

May 2024 is recognized as the national Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and we celebrate the diversity of cultures, breadth of achievement, and remarkable contributions of these communities.

IN THE MATTER OF Proclaiming May 2024 as Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and
Pacific Islander Heritage Month in Contra Costa County.
WHEREAS, nearly one in every five Contra Costa County residents belongs to an Asian
American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) community, and Contra Costa
County pays tribute to the many diverse cultures of the AANHPI community, recognizing their
roles as educators, public officials, entrepreneurs, community builders and activists, and leaders
shaping all facets of our society, culture, and daily lives; and
WHEREAS, with more than 6 million Californians of Asian or Pacific Islander descent,
California is home to dynamic AAPI communities that are an invaluable part of the state and
nation. May 2024 is proclaimed as California’s Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage
Month, recognizing and celebrating California’s diverse heritage with all the ways that AAPI
Californians enrich and strengthen our society; and
WHEREAS, May 2024 is recognized as the national Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and
Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and we celebrate the diversity of cultures, breadth of
achievement, and remarkable contributions of these communities; and
WHEREAS, work and commitment continue to put the American Dream within reach of all
people, and we celebrate the vibrancy, contributions, and future of Asian American and Native
Hawaiian Pacific Islander communities across the U.S.; and
WHEREAS, we recognize that throughout our history, AANHPI communities have been the
target of discrimination, exclusion, and violence. It is imperative that we, together with state and
federal partners, confront and condemn past and present racism and fight for the safety and
inclusion of our AANHPI friends and neighbors; and
WHEREAS, by proclaiming May 2024 as Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific
Islander Heritage Month, we honor and stand with pride alongside our community, a community
for everyone to celebrate without shame or fear of exclusion and violence based on food,
features, language and customs; and
WHEREAS, on May 14, 2024, the 2nd Annual Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific
Islander Commemorative Celebration, “Building on Our Legacies,” will be held at the Board
Chambers featuring a rich and diverse program including cultural dance and music
performances, heritage spotlights, and immigrant experiences. This celebration reaffirms Contra
Costa County’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and access.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Contra Costa County Board of
Supervisors do hereby proclaim May 2024, as Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander
Heritage Month. We are dedicated to creating an inclusive Contra Costa where all AANHPI
community members can thrive and prosper through substantive actions and equitable policies,
procedures, and practices protecting their wellbeing.
