IN THE MATTER OF PROCLAIMING FEBRUARY 2026 AS "CIVIL GRAND JURY

AWARENESS MONTH" IN CONTRA COSTA COUNTY

 

 

WHEREAS, civil grand juries are crucial components of California's judicial system, serving an important role investigating and reporting on the operations of local government and investigating allegations of a public official’s corrupt or willful misconduct in office, and when warranted, filing an "accusation" against that official to remove him or her from office; and

 

WHEREAS, civil grand juries provide an independent and objective voice for the public by conducted thorough those investigations, issuing findings and recommendations, and promoting transparency, accountability, and integrity in local government; and

WHEREAS, the work of the Contra Costa County Civil Grand Jury helps identify opportunities for improved efficiency, effectiveness, and fiscal responsibility, ultimately strengthening public trust in government institutions; and

WHEREAS, increasing public awareness of the civil grand jury’s role encourages civic engagement and informed participation, and helps ensure a diverse and representative pool of applicants committed to serving the residents of Contra Costa County; and

WHEREAS, every county in California has a civil grand jury made up of citizens, appointed by the county's Superior Court, who dedicate their time for a full year to grand jury service; and

 

WHEREAS, thanks to their commitment and hard work, civil grand jurors help ensure that local governments, such as counties, cities, special districts, and school districts, are operating legally and efficiently.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors does hereby proclaim February 2026 as “Civil Grand Jury Awareness Month” in Contra Costa County and encourages all residents to learn about the important role of the civil grand jury, to recognize the dedicated service of its members, and to consider participating in this vital civic duty.
