Report Title: Grant Extension #78-004-1 with the State of California Department of Public Health
☒Recommendation of the County Administrator ☐ Recommendation of Board Committee

RECOMMENDATIONS:
APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the Health Services Director, or designee, to accept Grant Extension #78-004-1 with the State of California Health and Human Services Agency, California Department of Public Health (CDPH), for the Immunization Champions - Supporting Schools with Immunization Workforce Development Funds, to extend the termination date through June 30, 2025 with no other changes to grant terms and conditions.
FISCAL IMPACT:
This extension will not change the original funding award of approximately $390,488 in funding from the CDPH. No County match required.
BACKGROUND:
In the wake of the pandemic, many children in California are behind on their routine immunizations. In addition, immunization rates against COVID-19 in ages 5-11 remain low. There are about 1,000 schools in California with kindergarten immunization rates below 90%, making them vulnerable to vaccine-preventable disease, such as measles, pertussis and chicken pox.
On July 26, 2022, the Board of Supervisors approved Grant Award #78-004 with the State of California Department of Public Health, to pay County in an amount not to exceed $390,488, for the Immunization Champions-Supporting Schools with Immunization Workforce Development funding, for the period July 1, 2022 through June 30, 2023.
These grant funds will allow the Health Services Department to follow-up with families whose students are behind on immunizations, conduct back-to-school immunization events, support school with any future COVID-19 vaccine mandates, provide technical assistance to schools with regard to reporting immunization coverage levels for students as required by California law, through June 30, 2023.
On May 15, 2024, the County received Grant Award Extension #78-004-1 to extend the termination date through June 30, 2025.
CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:
If this Extension is not approved the County will not be able to use the funding for immunization services for students in Fiscal Year 2024-25.
