THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA
and for Special Districts, Agencies and Authorities Governed by the Board

 

body

IN THE MATTER OF recognizing Mobility Matters for 50 years of dedicated nonprofit service, including 20 years of door-through-door transportation for Contra Costa County seniors and disabled veterans.

 

WHEREAS, one of the major challenges faced by senior residents and disabled veterans in Contra Costa County is access to reliable, door-through-door transportation. For many individuals, simply getting from their home to a vehicle, entering a destination such as a medical office or grocery store, and receiving assistance along the way can be a substantial challenge; and

WHEREAS, since 2005, Mobility Matters has addressed this critical need throughout Contra Costa County by providing free transportation through the dedicated efforts of its volunteers and staff. This service has enabled seniors a d disabled veterans to remain safely and independently in their own homes, helping them avoid unnecessary displacement and dependence upon costly care facilities; and

WHEREAS, the extraordinary impact of Mobility Matters is reflected in the following accomplishments:

                     91,206 total rides provided, and continuing to grow;

                     140 rides provided each week;

                     More than 500 members receiving transportation services, with an average age of 80, including 10 members who are over 100 years old; and

                     Approximately 200 volunteer drivers who generously give their time and service to their neighbors; and

WHEREAS, the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors has been fortunate to benefit from the dedication and service of Mobility Matters and, especially from the volunteer service contributions of residents throughout our County, including:

Vasu Devan from Moraga, the organization's longest-serving driver who started in 2007; and
Patti Cederwall from Clayton, who has provided the greatest number of rides 1,239 trips for 18,726 miles driven; and

WHEREAS, these generous volunteers exemplify the spirit of community service and demonstrate how individual acts of generosity can make a profound difference in the lives of our senior residents and disabled veterans;

 

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors hereby recognizes and celebrates Mobility Matters, its staff, and its dedicated volunteers for 50 years of nonprofit service to the residents of Contra Costa County.
