Report Title:                     Appointment to the Integrated Pest Management Advisory Committee

Recommendation of the County Administrator Recommendation of Board Committee

RECOMMENDATIONS:

APPOINT Dr. Andrew Sutherland, resident of Martinez, and San Francisco Bay Area Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Advisor with the University of California Cooperative Extension and Statewide IPM Program, to the University of California representative seat on the IPM Advisory Committee (IPMAC) with no term expiration.

FISCAL IMPACT:

There is no fiscal impact for this action.

BACKGROUND:

The University of California representative seat was created by the Board on February 27, 2024. The IPM Coordinator conducted outreach to the University of California (UC), seeking a member who has a clear affiliation with the UC system and either lives or works in Contra Costa County.

Dr. Andrew Sutherland is currently attending meetings and has agreed to be considered for formal appointment. He previously served multiple terms on the IPMAC. He held the Public Member #2-At Large seat from 2016 to 2019 and the Environmental Organization Representative seat from 2019 to 2022. It is anticipated that this appointee will be a gatekeeper of sorts for this seat and help coordinate informal alternates from the broader UC network to either attend in his place on occasion or alongside him as subject matter experts on specific discussion items relevant to their respective areas of expertise.

On May 16, 2024, the IPMAC unanimously voted to recommend to the Board the appointment of Dr. Sutherland to this seat.

CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:

The appointee will not be formally appointed to the seat and the official roster will be out of date.
