Report Title:                     District Attorney Community Based Prosecution Program Agreement with Sheriff’s Office

Recommendation of the County Administrator Recommendation of Board Committee

RECOMMENDATIONS:

APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the District Attorney, or designee, to execute a contract with the Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office to pay the District Attorney’s Office an amount not to exceed $213,680 for the Community Based Prosecution Program for the period July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027.

FISCAL IMPACT:

The District Attorney’s Office will receive $213,680 from the Sheriff’s Office in FY2026-27 to support community-based prosecution efforts. The Sheriff’s expenditure is 100% funded by the General Fund.

BACKGROUND:

The Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office has provided a Community Based Prosecutor to the Sheriff’s Office for a number of years and for a variety of purposes. The Community Based Prosecutor works on special projects at the request of the Sheriff, Undersheriff, Captains, and Assistant Sheriffs, as new issues and opportunities arise. While not limited to any specific project, the primary focus of the Community Based Prosecutor is to assist the Sheriff’s Office with charging review and analysis of criminal investigations to improve filing efficiencies for the benefit of both the Sheriff and the District Attorney, while also enhancing community safety.

CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:

The District Attorney's Office will be unable to receive funding from the Sheriff’s Office to provide community based prosecution services.
