Report Title:                     2025 Better Together Nature Positive Innovation Grant

Recommendation of the County Administrator Recommendation of Board Committee

RECOMMENDATIONS:

Acting as the governing board of the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District, APPROVE and AUTHORIZE the Fire Chief, or designee, to apply for and accept grant funding from Pacific Gas &  Electric Company (PG&E) in an amount not to exceed $100,000 to facilitate a countywide fire modeling study.

FISCAL IMPACT:

Applying for the grant does not have a fiscal impact.  If awarded, the project would be 100% grant funded with no required matching funds. The District will apply for the 2025 Better Together Nature Positive Innovation Grant in an amount not to exceed $100,000.

BACKGROUND:

The Contra Costa County Fire Protection District aims to optimize existing county funding and resources to achieve effective mitigation outcomes, utilizing science-based modeling. This will further stakeholder transparency through a shared understanding of wildfire risk and future mitigation project implementation.

The Contra Costa County Fire Protection District will be responsible for formulating plans and offering guidance concerning community education and outreach to public and non-profit agencies. Additionally, the District will assist in the adoption of new mitigation efforts and technologies, as well as disseminate information about innovative programs available to residents in support of mitigation and fire-adapted initiatives.  Outreach endeavors will also streamline the provision to identify the underserved communities where a resident property is situated in the direct pathway of fire.

CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:

If this action is not approved, the District would not apply for this grant funding and miss the opportunity for this revenue source.
