ADOPT Resolution NO. 2026 Recognizing
June 28th as Community is Stronger Than Cancer day
WHEREAS, as of 2025, about 1 out of every 18 Americans (18.6 million people) was a cancer survivor. By 2035, that number is projected to exceed 22 million.
WHEREAS, almost 5,800 individuals in the United States may be diagnosed with an invasive cancer in a single day in 2026; and
WHEREAS, a 2016 report estimated that at least 2.8 million people provided care to a person with cancer in the United States in a given year, and those individuals spent an average of 32.9 hours a week providing that care; and
WHEREAS, Cancer Support Community SF Bay Area serves over 2,300 local cancer patients and caregivers annually; and
WHEREAS, Community Is Stronger Than Cancer Day celebrates the collective support that patients, survivors, caregivers, and their families receive from their communities; and
WHEREAS, Community Is Stronger Than Cancer Day was first observed in 2021 by 175 Cancer Support Community and Gilda's Club locations across the country, providing community-based support to those affected by cancer; and
WHEREAS, in 2026, Community Is Stronger Than Cancer Day will be celebrated by more than 200 locations globally; and
WHEREAS, Community Is Stronger Than Cancer Day is a day of inspiration, connection, and hope; and
