Report Title:                     APPROVE Budget Amendment No. BDA-25-00165 for the Purchase of Hand-Held Rifle Rated Ballistic Shields for the Office of the Sheriff.

Recommendation of the County Administrator Recommendation of Board Committee

RECOMMENDATIONS:

APPROVE Budget Amendment No. BDA-25-00165, authorizing new revenue in the amount of $80,000 from Fund 114200 (Sheriff Forfeiture-Fed-DOJ) Org 0252 and appropriating it to Fund 100300 (General Fund) Org 2505 Sheriff County Patrol for the purchase of hand-held rifle rated ballistic shields for the Office of the Sheriff.

FISCAL IMPACT:

This action increases revenues and appropriations by $80,000 in the Sheriff’s Office General Fund department and is funded 100% by Fund 114200 Sheriff Forfeiture-Fed-DOJ.

BACKGROUND:

The Sheriff’s Office Patrol Division currently does not have hand-held rifle-rated ballistic shields available for use by deputies in the field. These shields are designed to protect deputies from rifle rounds fired by armed suspects, significantly increasing their safety during high-risk incidents. At present, deputies have no protective equipment capable of stopping rifle-caliber rounds. The addition of rifle-rated ballistic shields is essential for responding to active shooter events and other critical incidents involving armed individuals.

CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:

If the Board does not approve this request, deputies will continue to lack reliable protection when confronting suspects armed with rifles or similar high-powered firearms, increasing the risk of serious injury or death during such encounters.
