Report Title:                     Approve vacation accruals for the Co-Director, Race Equity and Community Empowerment

Recommendation of the County Administrator Recommendation of Board Committee

RECOMMENDATIONS:

APPROVE Resolution No. 26287 for additional vacation accruals for the Co-Director, Race Equity and Community Empowerment (AJA1) at a rate equal to 160 hours per year effective November, 13, 2023, as recommended by the Human Resources Department.

FISCAL IMPACT:

This action will result in a fiscal impact to the County General fund of approximately $3,600.00.

BACKGROUND:

The Co-Director positions within the Office of Racial Equity and Social Justice (ORESJ) were established as exempt and excluded from the Merit System by ordinance on May 23, 2023.  The Co-Directors are responsible for leading the formation of the ORESJ, as well as defining roles and hiring additional staff to support the office.

An extensive recruitment effort was employed to identify candidate pools for both positions.  Those candidates displaying the required qualifications were then invited to participate in a robust selection process that included pre-recorded interviews, formal community presentations and final selection interviews that were held in an open forum for the public to attend.  Two successful candidates were identified and extended employment offers in September 2023.

Upon hire, the Co-Director, Race Equity and Community Engagement negotiated vacation accruals at the rate of 160 hours a year in recognition of work experience within both the public sector and racial equity.

CONSEQUENCE OF NEGATIVE ACTION:

If this action is not approved, the County will not uphold the agreement made upon hire of the Co-Director, Race Equity and Community Empowerment.
